With nearly 20 years of professional experience, Prof. Dr. Sang Bum Chin was the director of the Institute for Intercultural Communication at Chonbuk National University from 2009 to 2016, having been a professor of German literature with the school from 1981 to 2016. In addition to his primary roles, he recognized a strong need to establish a new Comparative Academic Society of World Literature. He came to found such unique academic society with many domestic and international comparatists in 1995. He served as president of the Comparative Academic Society of World Literature in Korea from 2007 to 2009. He was persistent and worked as a dispatched professor of special research for the Korean Ministry of Education from 1997 to 1998 in order to finish his research on Asian influence on Western art and literature in Vienna University.

Alongside his primary endeavors, Prof. Dr. Chin was a reviewer in world literature studies for the Arts and Humanities Citation Index and in grant applications for Einstein Foundation Berlin in 2015, having also been a member of the organizing committee of ICLA the same year. Earlier in his career, he served as a member of the organizing committee for the International Conference of Comparative Literature with the International Comparative Literature Association in 2010.

Prof. Dr. Chin began his career as a student at Sogang University, where he earned a Doctor of Letters in 1988 with the title ”A comparative study of China Reception in the Works of Goethe and H. Hesse.” While he studied for two years in the German department of Vienna University, he received a scholarship from the Austrian government (BMWF) for completing his doctoral dissertation under the guidance of Professor Dr. Herbert Zemann of Vienna University on the above subject from March 1987 to December 1988.

A leading voice in his areas of expertise, Prof. Dr. Chin has been active with a number of professional organizations. He is a member of the International Federation for Modern Languages and Literatures, the International Comparative Literature Association, and the International German Language and Literature Association. A contributor of articles to professional journals, he has also written, co-written, and edited numerous texts in the areas of German language, German literature and Korean globalization. Most recently, he published “Discourse of the Strategies for Globalization of Korean Culture” with 21 specialists in 2018, as well as the “Helsinki International Korea Studies” with various professors with the ultimate goal of globalizing Korean culture, where he was recommended as vice president. At present he works as an editorial board member for the International Journal of Literature and Arts.

Throughout his career, Prof. Dr. Chin has been recognized for his contributions. The recipient of a Meritorious Golden Medal from the Republic of Korea, he also received a Korea Social Contribution Award and an Innovation Leader Leading Korea Award from the Korean Media Society. The recipient of a scholarship from the Austrian Government, he was a featured listee of the Korean Dictionary of Personality of Unified Communications.
