Prior to obtaining these roles, he was vice director of Wakayanagi Hospital from 1998 to 2011 and head of the department of surgery at Isawa Prefectural Hospital from 1994 to 1998. From 1988 to 1994, he was head of the department of surgery at Kitakami Prefectural Hospital, having held the same position at Ofunato Prefectural Hospital from 1985 to 1988. Earlier in his career, Dr. Tan was an assistant professor in the department of surgery at Tohoku University from 1973 to 1985.

Dr. Masaki Tan began his career as a student at Tohuku University, obtaining a Bachelor of Medicine in 1971. He continued his studies with the school, completing a Doctor of Medicine in 1978. He subsequently joined Kinki University, where he earned a Bachelor of Laws in 1985.

A respected voice in the industry, Dr. Tan has been affiliated with a number of professional organizations. He is a member of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the American Chemical Society, the New York Academy of Sciences, and the International Society of Personalized Medicine.
