SEOUL--(Korea Newswire)--Hyosung has joined forces with Cultural Heritage Administration and Arumjigi Foundation, a nonprofit cultural group, in a project to regain the original form of Changdeokgung Palace in Seoul.

Hyosung signed a MOU with Cultural Heritage Administration and Arumjigi Foundation on Oct. 31 in Changdeokgung Gajeongdang to preserve Daejojeon and Huijeongdang in Changdeokgung Palace and reproduce their look of modern times. Hyosung will sponsor the reenactment project with 135 million won.

The sponsorship will be spent to reenact Daejojeon and Huijeongdang of the days of the Korean Empire (1897-1910). The interior space of the two royal residences of the early 20th century when it introduced electricity and light fixtures will be reenacted with the installation of chandeliers, carpets, glass windows and other items of those days.

Daejojeon and Huijeongdang were originally used by kings and queens of the Joseon Dynasty (1392-1910) as their sleeping places, but in the late Joseon Dynasty, they were used as the royal offices.

They were destroyed by fire in 1917, rebuilt in 1920 and used by King Sunjong to the end of the Korean Empire.

Presently, access to the inside of the royal palace is restricted. Cultural Heritage Administration plans to repair and restore all of the facilities inside the palace, open them in November tentatively and to the general public officially next spring.

“It is very meaningful that Daejojeon and Huijeongdang in Changdeokgung will be opened to citizens after regaining their original shape,” Hyosung Chairman Cho Hyun-Joon said. “As a corporate ‘keeper of Korean heritage,’ we will continue various works to protect cultural assets jointly with Arumjigi Foundation.”

Hyosung has done activities to protect the environment on the premises of royal palaces including Changdeokgung and Deoksugung from 2006 as part of its program to sponsor Korean culture and arts. Hyosung has been appointed by Cultural Heritage Administration as a “corporate keeper of Korean heritage” in recognition of its sponsorship of the reenactment project as well as its continued activities to protect palaces.
